The Alliance for International Education Interactive Online Seminar Series 2021-2

EDUCATING FOR PEACE AND SOCIAL JUSTICE: THE ROLE OF INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION

Starting in October 2021, the Alliance for International Education (AIE) is hosting a seminar series over 6 months to prepare the ground for their conference next year. Each seminar will have two lead presenters who will address the guiding question from different perspectives, sometimes complementary and sometimes contrasting, before allowing all participants time to explore the issues in more depth through further discussion in groups that are small enough for every participant to be engaged.

International schools in all contexts often claim that they set out to do just this – educate for peace and social justice, and many international educators are genuinely motivated by the desire to instil a passion for justice and intercultural understanding in their students.  But how effective are we?  What challenges do we face?  And what can we do to have even more impact in the extended communities in which we work.

Join us to explore these questions. I will be one of the lead presenters at the first seminar in the series on October 30, 2021.

Structure: I will do a short 25-minute presentation, which will be followed by another 25-minute presentation by the second speaker (see below), a 40-minute discussion and a closing plenary.

Content: In this presentation, I will focus on a critique of the ideology of ‘being international’ and the way schools disengage with the local and homogenize local students. I will argue that a deeper, more meaningful engagement with the local is essential for nurturing international-mindedness and for nurturing connection to place. Connection to place is important for all students – both the movers and stayers.
